DENTISTRY
Equine dentistry has improved significantly over the past decade with the introduction of improved floating techniques and power tools. While many practitioners have taken more aggressive measures with these developments (radical bit seats, smooth occlusal (chewing) surfaces, soft tissue trauma, etc.), Dr. Rosenberg employs a minimally invasive approach to shaping your horse's mouth. Bit seats are less drastic and the natural chewing surface of each tooth is maintained to maximize feed efficiency, comfortable mastication and communication between horse and rider.
Your horse is sedated with her/his head supported by a stand or suspended halter. Lateral and rostral mandibular (jaw) movement is evaluated before a speculum is placed in the mouth. This allows the teeth, tongue, gingival and buccal surfaces to be inspected collectively for abnormalities. A Powerfloat ® is used for most procedures, and as considered necessary, supplemented with manual floats and dremels. Depending on the condition of your horse's mouth, the procedure often takes about thirty minutes. Dr. Rosenberg has found that floating every 12 to 18 months significantly improves and prolongs the dental health of your horse.
